mammalian COCOON

2021

The Mammalian Cocoon questions how certain, biological imagery provoke feelings of discomfort and otherness? The embroidered motif repeated throughout the garment very obviously resembles a human nipple, an image that in society is seen as the source of life while also being hypersexualized and shamed. That symbol is hyperbolized by the way the figure is trapped inside of this giant enclosure of nipples. It represents being trapped inside one's own body which provokes feelings of alienation and derealization. This addresses a certain paradox when dealing with bodily imagery, that the body is viewed as separate, or other, from ourselves it is unsettling.
